About Hills4Hearts

Hills4Hearts is an annual charity running event initiated by Phil Jordan in 2019. Participants of the campaign can not only support through running but also donate within their financial ability.

All proceeds will be used to implement the "Survive to Thrive" projects, providing resuscitation equipment to reduce the infant mortality rate in poor mountainous districts in Vietnam.

In addition to direct donations, Hills4Hearts also organizes fundraising by selling practical products to spread the meaningful message and connect donors to support newborn babies to have a safer and healthier start in life.

Our Journey

In 2019, Mr. Phil Jordan and his wife, Mrs. Laurey, unfortunately, lost their son Billy when he was just a 5-month-old fetus in the womb. This loss left an indelible emptiness in their hearts.

Subsequently, Phil had the opportunity to meet Mr. Rad Kivette, the CEO of VinaCapital Foundation, and learn about the "Survive to Thrive" program. This program aims to reduce the infant mortality rate by increasing medical capabilities for district-level healthcare workers in remote mountainous areas. It was here that Phil and Laurey chose Vietnam as the place to put their heart and soul into the meaningful Hills4Hearts campaign.

2019

The first steps were taken in Sapa, Vietnam to kick off the annual Hills4Hearts campaign.

2022

Hills4Hearts campaign returned and took place online after the COVID-19 pandemic.

2023

The 3rd edition of the Hills4Hearts campaign is organized through offline running events in Australia, Vietnam and several other countries.

    Saving the Cadong Mountain Flower

    On a late April day in 2021, baby Nguyen Thi Vy, born at the Nam Tra My District Health Center in Quang Nam province,  was diagnosed with premature birth and irregular breathing. Vy was immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) equipped with a neonatal resuscitation system sponsored by the Hills4Hearts campaign for the first time. The doctors promptly performed life-saving skills and techniques to assist Vy's breathing. Fortunately, Vy's breathing gradually returned to normal, and the oxygen saturation level remained stable.

    Vy is the first baby in the family of Cadong ethnic minority people. The family faced considerable problems in terms of their tough circumstances and the transportation hurdles they had to overcome to bring Vy and her mother to the health center for emergency care. According to the doctors, Vy is one of the fortunate babies who received timely treatment through the sponsored Neonatal Intensive Care System. After three days of treatment and close monitoring, Vy was discharged in stable and healthy condition. We hope that baby Nguyen Thi Vy will grow up strong and shine bright like a flower of the mountains.

    Reviving the breath of a M'Nong ethnic minority baby

    Just as she let out her first cry, baby Dinh Thi Quyen, a M'Nong ethnic minority infant, was immediately sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Nam Tra My District Health Center in Quang Nam province, in severe medical conditions. Despite of her rose skin, her nails and legs appeared soft and thin, and she was delivered early weighing only 1.4kg.

    Using the Silverman score, which assesses the degree of newborn respiratory distress without respiratory support based on five clinical criteria, the doctors determined that Quyen's score was 7, indicating severe neonatal respiratory failure. Quyen got immediate emergency care at the Nam Tra My District Health Center's NICU via the neonatal resuscitation system supported by the Hills4Hearts campaign. She was kept warm and continuously monitored for her vital signs. Fortunately, thanks to prompt medical intervention, Quyen's breathing gradually stabilized, and she was able to be discharged shortly after.

    Saving an ethnic minority newborn with jaundice

    Born full-term and healthy at the Nam Tra My District Health Center in Quang Nam province, just three days after birth, baby Pham Thi The showed signs of jaundice which gradually appeared from the abdomen to the lower extremities. The baby was then admitted to the neonatal department for diagnosis and treatment. According to the doctors, jaundice appeared from dermal zone I to zone IV of the body and there were no abnormalities in other organs. The doctors diagnosed Baby The with neonatal jaundice caused by abnormally high levels of bilirubin. Baby The was promptly placed in an incubator to keep warm during the phototherapy treatment; her eyes were also covered to shut out the bright light.

    Although neonatal jaundice is common, about 3 in 5 babies (accounting for 60%) have jaundice; if a baby has severe jaundice and does not get quick treatment, it can lead to brain damage. Thanks to timely intervention and essential support from the neonatal care equipment sponsored by the Hills4Hearts campaign to the Nam Tra My District Health Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Baby The recovered within just four days and was discharged in stable health condition.

About the program

Survive To Thrive

The Survive to Thrive program was first established in 2010 with the inauguration of the Neonatal Intensive Care Room at the Pediatric and Newborn Department of the Danang Hospital for Women and Children.

This is one of the 7 national programs of the VinaCapital Foundation (VCF). Survie to Thrive, with the mission of accompanying the Vietnamese healthcare system in the strategy to reduce the infant mortality rate, especially premature infants in mountainous, rural and remote areas of Vietnam.

The program sponsors essential medical equipment for Neonetal Unit at district-level medical centers and organizes traning courseson neonatal emergency resuscitation skills for medical staffs staffs, aiming to enhance medical capabilities for the district-level healthcare workforce—the first unit to receive and provide treatment for patients.

    Thanh Hung was born prematurely at 35 weeks as the second twin through a C-section on April 27th, 2021, in Yen Bai province. Having a twin means that the mother is prone to giving birth prematurely, which puts the babies and the mother’s health in danger. As a result, the baby suffered from acute respiratory failure and neonatal hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).     On February 28, 2020, Phil Jordan’s family and the VinaCapital Foundation announced the donation of 10,605 USD in neonatal care equipment for Van Yen Commune Health Center.
