Thanh Hung was born prematurely at 35 weeks as the second twin through a C-section on April 27th, 2021, in Yen Bai province. Having a twin means that the mother is prone to giving birth prematurely, which puts the babies and the mother’s health in danger. As a result, the baby suffered from acute respiratory failure and neonatal hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If Hung was not promptly treated, the condition can lead to many dangerous, even life-threatening complications.
Right after birth, Hung was supported with an Oxygen balloon and Vitamin K1 injection. Then, the doctors immediately put him in phototherapy and assisted the baby’s breathing with a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine and frequent SPO2 (Saturation of peripheral oxygen) measurements. After 10 days of treatment, Hung was discharged from the hospital with a healthy respiratory system and stable health development. He was one of 125 newborns who were saved by the CPAP machine, phototherapy, and intubation kit donated by VCF and our donor, Phil Jordan, through our Survive to Thrive program in 2020 at Van Yen District Hospital.
According to the Deputy head of the NICU Department – Van Yen District Hospital, Doctor Do Nhu Viet, the hospital’s referral rate decreased from 5.3% to 4.8% and many severe cases did not require a referral, thanks to the donated devices. The precious machines have not only helped save the lives of premature babies and improve the healthcare quality in the area but also motivated the VCF team to continue our journey of transforming communities. Thank you Phil Jordan and all donors of Hills 4 Hearts for your incredible fundraising efforts, your gifts have enabled us to bring hope, strength, and a brighter future to the most underserved!
